¿Por qué el ictus y no otra enfermedad?

El Ictus en 4 preguntas

What is stroke?

It is a cerebrovascular disease. Blood flow decreases, causing the brain to not receive the necessary amount and the nerve cells stop working.

Who is at risk?

From the age of 55 onwards, people tend to suffer a stroke more frequently, and the probability increases with age. Also, although less frequent, it can appear in newborns, children and adolescents.
Stroke is the leading cause of mortality among Spanish women and the second among men, according to the Study Group on Cerebrovascular Diseases of the Spanish Society of Neurology (GEECV-SEN).

What are the symptoms?

Sudden difficulty in speaking and understanding, facial paralysis, sudden severe headache, partial or total loss of strength in one leg and/or arm, sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes, loss of stability and balance

What are the causes?

Previous stroke, smoking, high blood pressure, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high red blood cell count, excessive alcohol and drug consumption, climate and season, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, etc.

Important! One symptom is enough to go to the doctor.

Don’t wait. The reaction time will define the severity of the sequelae.

If you have one or more symptoms, you can activate the Stroke Code by calling your local health emergency number. This will activate a procedure that will speed up the recognition of symptoms and the immediate transfer to a hospital by the emergency services.

10 best practices

Check your blood pressure periodically. To help keep it from rising, do not add too much salt to your food.

Periodically check your cholesterol.

Calculate your body mass index (BMI), if it is higher than 25 you are overweight, so BEWARE!

Do you smoke? Quit. Seek help if necessary.

Alcohol? Okay, but not much.

Do you work out? Yeah? Great, that’s a sure thing.
No? Start now. If you are not very fit, start by walking 2 or 3 km a day and periodically increase the speed, don’t stop every few minutes, it’s no good! Swimming, cycling or yoga (mainly to control stress) are also good for you.

Moderate your stress level. If you can’t avoid it, try to do a little yoga every day to lower it, as we said in the previous point.

Eat well and balanced, especially fruits and vegetables, and reduce “bad” fats. Say no to industrial pastries, they are not good for you. This point is fundamental to help you with 2 and 3.

If you notice any of the symptoms, even if they are mild, activate the Ictus code. Time is money!

Be consistent. These good practices are not temporary, they are for life. Courage!
